Nature Loves Courage is an electro-funk-rock band bending entire genres to their will.

Their name is inspired by a quote from psychedelic philosopher Terence McKenna, and embodies their belief that the most important thing humans can do is create art in the face of increasing adversity.

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles.”

Terence McKenna

NLC was born in 2019 among three long-time friends and musical partners – McKenna Rowe (vocals, music/lyrics, keys), Jake Bergman (bass) and Garrett Smith (drums). Guitarist Joe De Sa joined the band in 2021. McKenna spent years composing music for TV, commercials, theatre projects and DJ gigs. Being in a band again brings the joy that comes with hearing her compositions brought to life by live players.

With lots of musical influences, NLC doesn’t want to be categorized, but they have drawn comparisons to other groundbreaking, female-fronted bands, such as Blondie, Goldfrapp, Siouxsie and the Banshees. They gravitate towards a big sound fusing electronic/synth elements, funk bass lines, beats and rock drums/guitar, while still preserving a sense of “singer-songwriter intimacy” and thought-provoking lyrics about the confusing, high-tech world we currently inhabit.
